Dog water intake calculator

Roughly how much a healthy dog drinks in a day, and — more usefully — what a change in that amount is telling you.

The rule of thumb

Maintenance intake for a healthy adult dog at rest is commonly put at around 50 to 60 ml per kilogram of body weight per day. In imperial terms that lands close to the familiar “about an ounce of water per pound of body weight”, which is where that version of the guidance comes from.

This is a rule of thumb rather than a precise physiological constant, and it is given here as a range for that reason.

What legitimately moves it

The reason to measure at all. A sustained rise in drinking with no change in weather, food or activity is one of the earlier owner-visible signs of several conditions worth catching early, including kidney disease, diabetes and Cushing's. The useful action is not to compare against this calculator but to know your own dog's normal, so that a change registers. Measure what you put in the bowl for three ordinary days to establish that baseline.

A clear, sustained change is a reason to see a vet. It is not a reason to restrict water, which can do real harm.
